Best Practises & Play Provision:

Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) for Schools

Earth Day Canada’s Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) Program for schools is informed by the best practices and key findings of an independent review of the OPAL program in the United Kingdom, where it originated.

OPAL U.K. Overview

The Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) Primary Programme is a mentor supported school improvement programme. It addresses all of the areas schools must plan for if they want to strategically and sustainably improve the quality of their play opportunities. The OPAL Primary Programme is the only programme of its kind that has been independently proven to sustainably improve the quality of play in British primary schools.

Based on these best practices, Earth Day Canada has developed its OPAL program to address play provision in Canadian schools and launched a pilot project in the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) during the 2016/17 school year. In partnership with the TDSB, and with input from the Environmental Sustainability Advisory Committee the OPAL program will roll out to 42 schools by 2020. Our goal is to bring the program to schools across the country.
