Earth Day Canada's EarthPLAY Initiative

Outdoor Play and LearningEarth Day Canada is thrilled to be among 14 organizations to receive funding from the Lawson Foundation as part of a national outdoor play strategy. Over the next two years, EDC will deliver Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) training and coaching to six diverse school communities in Toronto. Working with a lead team of adults in each school including teachers, administrators, child care staff, caretakers, and parents, we will support the development of a play implementation plan for outdoor recess including kindergarten play-time, recess, lunch, before and after-school.

OPAL has helped make play better in hundreds of elementary schools and early years settings. The program originated in the United Kingdom in 2006 and to date, over 200 school communities have benefited from OPAL training. EDC will be the first organization in Canada to deliver OPAL training to school communities.

Through core program support from TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, EDC’s EcoKids team will also be reimagining our website and developing new resources to include a greater emphasis on outdoor, self-directed play as a key element of environmental education. Stay tuned for upcoming events, articles, professional development sessions and tools to help you increase play opportunities in your community or school.

EDC is grateful for this support as we develop and deliver our EarthPLAY initiative and would like to thank the Lawson Foundation and TD Friends of the Environment Foundation for their generous contributions.
