POP-UPs lead to Adventure Playgrounds

EarthPLAY’s POP-UP Adventure Playground program showcases the possibility of child-directed adventure play using loose parts in urban green spaces.

POP-UP events are staffed by trained playworkers who model the role adults can perform to support their children’s play. POP-UPs have been one-day events across the GTHA, and we are moving toward recurring events and staff training, to culminate in community adventure play.

The POP-UP program is an affordable way to animate local playgrounds and green spaces with enriched, nature-based, creative and social play opportunities for children aged 3 – 14.

EarthPLAY offers organizations training in playwork and works with communities to develop adventure play in local parks. This training allows partnership organizations to enrich and enhance provision for play.

How it works

EDC coordinates POP-UP Adventure Playgrounds with partner organizations

Partners supply site & logistics coordinator, and promote to their community

We do intake assessment and provide staffing & resources

We also provide a selection of specially curated loose parts

While the children make their own playground with these materials, our trained Play Rangers support the action and engage with community members

A typical POP-UP lasts about 4 to 5 hours

When the POP-UP has concluded, EarthPLAY staff conduct a follow-up review to explore options for additional short- and long-term adventure play programming
