Consume Less, Play More.
EarthPLAY for Earth Day at School
EarthPLAY is a program of Earth Day Canada that puts outdoor, unstructured play back into the lives of children at school, in parks and on neighbourhood streets. Outdoor, self-directed play is one of the best ways to connect children to their environment and community; to nurture their ingenuity, independence and sense of agency; and to support their mental and physical well-being. So for Earth Day 2018, we’re challenging Canadian schools to Consume Less, Play More by reclaiming recess and outdoor play!
Hold an extra or extended recess!
Demonstrate your school’s commitment to outdoor free play by holding an extended or extra recess. To support accessible and inclusive play, introduce loose parts; invite students to bring games, toys, and equipment to play with at recess; or research retro games to bring to the playground (skipping rope, four square, tug-of-war, jumpsies).
Host an Adventure Play Day!
Provide an opportunity for students to connect to their inner and outer nature through self-directed outdoor play by hosting an Adventure Play Day. Provide your students with a variety of natural and recycled materials, commonly referred to as “loose parts”, and transform your schoolyard into an adventure playground, where all sorts of neat and unexpected things can be created, constructed and organized.
