Action Reduction is expanding its activities in Portneuf, Trois-Rivieres and Manicouagan
Thanks to a contribution from the Alcoa Foundation, businesses in the Portneuf RCM and the City of Trois-Rivières benefited from personalized support to help them commit to reducing waste at the source. In 2025, the Manicouagan RCM is following suit and will also benefit from this tailored support.
The overall goal across these three territories is to divert 1,000 tonnes of organic waste from landfill, by prioritizing businesses that generate the largest amount of waste.
Additionally, training sessions will be offered in schools in Baie-Comeau to support the implementation of organic waste collection. Interested schools are invited to register here now and will be contacted in the coming weeks.
PROJECT OBJECTIVES AND TIMELINE
Phase 1 – November 2022 to October 2023 – Portneuf RCM
Results: Nearly 255 tonnes of organic waste were diverted from landfill thanks to awareness-raising efforts and personalized support provided to 99 businesses and institutions in the region. Among them, 14 received the “Certifié Régie” certification, a new program developed jointly by the Régie verte de Portneuf and Earth Day Canada.
Phase 2 – November 2023 to December 2025 – City of Trois-Rivières
Results: Nearly 344 tonnes of organic waste were diverted from landfill thanks to awareness-raising efforts and personalized support provided to 116 businesses and institutions in the region.
Phase 3 – April 2025 to December 2025 – Manicouagan RCM
Objective: Divert 500 tonnes of organic waste from landfill by supporting 100 businesses in improving their residual materials management practices and reducing waste at the source.
HOW DOES THE SUPPORT TOWARDS REDUCTION AND WASTE VALORIZATION WORK?
The goal is to raise awareness and support voluntary businesses in diverting their organic materials and optimizing their practices in source reduction, reuse, and sound waste management.
The proposed support includes:
- An initial visit to the business to identify the needs and constraints of the merchant;
- A comprehensive audit of the business’s waste management (brief characterization of collection containers and analysis of operations);
- Development of an action plan to target and prioritize solutions to be implemented;
- Support in the implementation of selected measures and monitoring of progress;
- Employee training on sorting and communication tools available on request.
