Roles and responsibilities of the Board of Directors

As a non-profit organization, Earth Day Canada is overseen by a Board of Directors composed of volunteer members. The Board has legal responsibility for the organization’s governance and contributes to the long-term vision and mission oversight. In collaboration with the executive management, the Board is tasked with ensuring that the organization adheres to its strategic plan.

Engagement

  • The term of office is 1 year or 2 years.
  • The Board of Directors meets for approximately 1.5 hours approximately 5-6 times per year, usually on Thursdays (sometimes Wednesdays) at noon between 12:00 PM and 1:30 PM. Typically, meetings occur every 8 weeks with breaks in July and August (January, March, May, June, September, October).
  • Board members must also be available to participate in at least one board committee. Committees meet approximately every 2 months, or more frequently during busier periods.
  • Once elected, a board member may stand for an officer position (president, vice president, treasurer, secretary).
  • Board members are expected to conduct readings and research necessary to contribute fully to discussions and decision-making.
  • Board members are encouraged to attend and participate in promoting Earth Day Canada events as much as possible and to engage in philanthropic research.
  • Some responsiveness to emails is expected to ensure smooth communication between the Board of Directors and executive management.
