Using Science to Build Resilient Cities
Tomorrow’s Forest – In The City: What Is It?
Tomorrow’s Forest – In The City supports Quebec’s Regional County Municipalities (RCMs) in the planning and implementation of science-based urban greening projects designed to strengthen climate resilience.
The project aims to create healthier, more inclusive, and more sustainable cities where nature protects the future and enhances quality of life for communities.
Through targeted interventions and the planting of diverse, climate-appropriate vegetation, the project helps to:
- increase canopy cover and biodiversity,
- reduce heat islands,
- improve air and water quality,
- promote greater social and climate justice.
Context
By 2030, Quebec RCMs must adopt a climate plan aimed at reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and strengthening climate change adaptation. However, limited financial resources, insufficient technical expertise, and administrative and logistical constraints can make implementation challenging.
Approach
The project offers RCMs a turnkey solution to achieve their greening objectives, structured around three key phases:
1. Assessment and diagnostic of urban trees
2. Development of the greening plan
3. Implementation of the greening plan
Benefits for RCMs
By joining Tomorrow’s Forest – In The City, an RCM gains access to:
- Comprehensive support, including grant application preparation, coordination, and end-to-end management of greening projects,
- Additional public funding,
- Innovative solutions to accelerate municipal climate adaptation,
- Scientific support at every stage,
- Long-term monitoring to ensure complete greening.
ELIGIBILITY
RCMs with a climate plan approved by the Quebec Ministry of the Environment, the Fight Against Climate Change, Wildlife and Parks (MELCCFP) are invited to contact us at plantation@jourdelaterre.org.
Municipalities without an approved climate plan may also benefit from the project.
