Tips and tricks
The end of the year is almost here, and Christmas is fast approaching! 🎄
We all know that around this celebration, there’s a real frenzy of consumption, especially with the “gift rush” for friends, colleagues, and family. According to PwC Canada, Canadian consumers are expected to spend an average of $1,853 this holiday season on gifts, travel, and entertainment. This marks a 13% increase compared to last year. But before we get carried away by the shopping frenzy and holiday excitement, let’s take a moment to think about something really important: what if, this year, we changed the way we give gifts?🎁
Because, let’s face it, we’ve all been there—receiving gifts that end up forgotten in a corner of the house or, worse, straight into the trash. It’s not only unfair to the environment but also to the very idea of gift-giving!
So, imagine giving a gift that has a minimal impact on our planet: one that uses fewer natural resources, isn’t wasted on excessive packaging, and, ideally, hasn’t traveled halfway around the world to reach our hands. Do you have any ideas for what you could give this year?
I know, it’s not always easy! Even though we all have the best intentions, time tends to fly, but don’t worry! If you’re already thinking about your holiday shopping, here are a few gift ideas that won’t just make your loved ones happy—they’ll also be a gift to our planet!🌱
Gift Subscription Cards
Many of us love art, and what better gift than the chance to enjoy a whole year of cultural discoveries? A subscription to a museum, tickets to a play, or a concert are perfect ideas for culture lovers. 🎭🎶
But if you prefer giving a bit of nature, why not choose tickets to a national park or offer a Shinrin Yoku experience, the famous “forest bath” that helps you recharge in the heart of nature?🌿
For those looking for relaxation and well-being, a visit to the spa or a massage session will surely bring joy!
Visit Christmas Markets and Discover Local Treasures
Have you explored them yet? During this time of year, Christmas markets pop up all over Canada, and even online. It’s the perfect opportunity to discover unique products created by local artisans and entrepreneurs.
Giving a handmade, local, and high-quality gift is not only a way to make your loved ones happy but also a great way to support the local economy.
Here are a few great places to check out:
– Grand Christmas Market in Montreal in the city center, where you’ll find creations by local artisans.
– Online Christmas Market: Offering over 100 products from Quebec artisans, entrepreneurs, and creators.
– Ottawa Christmas Market: Located at Aberdeen Plaza, featuring over 50 local vendors offering a wide variety of products to discover.
– Vancouver Christmas Market: Located at Jack Poole Plaza, just outside the Vancouver Convention Centre, near the Olympic Cauldron at 1055 Canada Place. It’s divided into different sections where you can discover products from about 100 vendors: artisans, gourmet products, food and drinks, wines and spirits, and more.
– Distillery District Christmas Market: One of Toronto’s most famous Christmas markets, set in the historic Distillery District. The place is beautifully decorated with a giant Christmas tree, fairy lights, festive decorations, Santa, elves, and much more!
– The Recycler Artisans’ Market: They offer zero-waste items and gifts made from at least 75% recycled materials (a great option, but keep it in mind for next year, as it ended on December 1st).
Shopping in Thrift Stores: An Adventure Not to Miss!
Have you ever explored thrift stores? These shops often hide real treasures! You can find original pieces in great condition, all at unbeatable prices. It’s a real gem, especially for younger folks who love unique items. 👗💫
What’s great about thrift stores is that they offer more than just a chance to snag a great deal. They give new life to clothes and promote more responsible consumption. Plus, you get to choose not to be part of the 10% of greenhouse gas emissions generated annually by the textile industry. If you want to learn more, we have an article on our blog about the “fast fashion” culture.
Why not give it a try? Would you dare to take the challenge? 😉
Give a Book as a Gift
Whether it’s a precious find in a thrift store or a book you’ve particularly loved, a book is always a gift that brings joy. Sometimes, a book that has inspired us becomes even more valuable when we share it with someone special.
Here’s a little tip to personalize your gift: why not add notes on the pages you loved? It adds a personal touch, as if you’re giving a little piece of yourself along with the book!
Our list of suggestions could go on, but I’ll leave you with these ideas that will surely give you plenty of options for your next holiday purchases. And the best part? They help us make a positive impact on the planet.
Finally, let’s not forget that the most precious gift, the one that can’t be found in any store, is our time. Sharing a moment, offering a listening ear, or simply making a call to someone we love—that’s what truly matters during the holidays.
As Antoine de Saint-Exupéry said so beautifully in The Little Prince: “One sees clearly only with the heart. What is essential is invisible to the eye.”
Now, it’s your turn to choose…
Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a more eco-friendly New Year! 🌟
